MovableType Blogging Software (07 May 2006)

Our first blogging entry concerns the blog itself. We started out with the intention of creating our own code to publish our experiences, but then quickly decided it would make more sense to use a package.

The package selected is MovableType. It has a free version which restricts the number of authors and weblogs. Thus far our experience with it has been very positive. It installs without too much bother. The documentation is good and the administration system is quite easy to navigate and understand. Most importantly from our perspective the content as displayed on the web site is controlled by a rich set of tags. This makes it possible to customise it so that it conforms exactly to the look-and-feel of the rest of the site.

Blogging has a language all of its own, so to explain the links which follow:-
Permalinks - blogs are normally displayed as a set of entries in descending time order. However each entry also has its own unique page. The permalink provides a link to that page such that it can be bookmarked or linked for future reference.
Comments - this is where you can add your comments, not surprisingly.
Trackbacks - rather than commenting here you may prefer to add a comment in your own blog. Trackbacks are the mechanism that allow you to do that in such a way that your comment also shows up here.
