For a number of years we have provided hosting packages as a service to our web development customers. These were originally operated on a reseller package based on shared Linux hosting.
Mostly this worked very well but occassionally it could be the cause of problems. Firstly being on shared hosting meant that you might get periods of poor performance. Generally these would occur when other users on the same server were abusing the system, for example running email spam operations. Secondly the underlying software components could be changed at any time by the hosting provided. This could cause compatibility issues, particularly with interactive sites built using PHP and MySQL.
For these reasons we are migrating to a new reseller account, this time based on a virtual dedicated server. The concept is that a single physical server is partitioned such that each account operates in the same manner as if a small machine were dedicated to it. By this means you are isolated from other accounts on the physical machine and you have much greater control over the operating system configuration.
So the virtual dedicated server offers a good stepping-stone between shared hosting and dedicated hosting. We will this discuss further In subsequent blogs.
The information is provided 'as is'. It has worked for us,
but it may not work for you, so you use it at your own risk. We can't
enter into any correspondance about anything recorded here but please feel free to leave a comment.
